As GM looks to deliver on its promise of EVs for everyone, the automaker is recruiting talent from the best. GM announced Thursday that it has hired Kurt Kelty, former Tesla executive and recognized battery expert, as it aims to launch low-cost EVs. GM said the hire will help it accelerate toward its vision of an all-electric future.

In a blog post, Maxwell Technologies president and CEO David Schramm argues that ultracapacitors would be a perfect fit for GM’s eAssist second-generation light electrification technology ( Earlier post.) The eAssist system is slated to be GM’s current default mild hybrid system for electrification applications of 20 kW power or less.

GM Europe staged the world premieres of the Opel Ampera, the European cousin of the Chevrolet Volt, and the Chevrolet Spark mini-car, at the Geneva Motor Show. GM will manufacture the Ampera’s battery pack will be manufactured by GM at the first lithium-ion production facility to be operated by a major automaker in the United States.

The researchers made their discovery by developing a technique to measure the amounts of inactive lithium species on the anode—a first in the field of battery research—and studying their micro- and nanostructures. The findings could pave the way for bringing rechargeable lithium metal batteries from the lab to the market.
