Battery-gasoline hybrids go back more than 20 years to the first Toyota Prius, but real mainstream battery-only electric EVs are only in their second decade. This marketing choice by Ford is either a very bad idea (brand dilution) or a genius plan to move the pony car into the modern era. Not an H or D in sight. Fine with me.

“Any new technology like the Chevy Volt takes time to become profitable,&# said Jay Friedland, the legislative director for Plug-In America , an electric-car advocacy group. is hoping to launch the Volt in late 2010 with a price tag of about $40,000. About $750 million is needed for near-term Volt development, according to the company.

Last week the government made a £250m move to square the circle. Some £20mwill help establish a network of charging points in cities and other areasof dense traffic.

We interviewed Senator Lugar in DC recently — as we caught the Capitol Hill debut of Bright Automotive’s Idea — a plug-in hybrid electric delivery vehicle. They claim the Idea will save a 250 vehicle fleet company more than $500,000 a year in reduced fuel costs. It was a pre-Earth Day preview.
