N ow that the number one automaker and the number two automaker has made the commitment to building Plug In hybrid / electric vehicles by 2010, another automotive giant is joining the race. Here is the story from the New York Times : Nissan Plans Electric Car in U.S. It already has the Prius and five other hybrids selling in the U.S.

Fay says that the company is planning to sell the full complement of 2,600 RAV EVs in California, plus 30,000 Prius plug-in hybrids and to introduce iQ EV urban car sharing programs to achieve ZEV compliance. The RAV4 EV combines a Tesla-designed and produced battery and electric powertrain with Toyota’s most popular SUV model.

There are 2 Prime trims, SE and XSE, both equipped with All-Wheel Drive and a fully-electric hybrid powertrain.

It included follow-on notes about jumping on-board another hybrid -- diesel-electric locomotive with Amtrak signage.
