Since it was not a Level 2 charger, I knew it would not gain much juice overnight. That meant looking for a decent public DC charging station in a nearby town. On the last day I knew I would have to get a full charge to make it back to Heathrow and leave it with enough juice for the driver who would collect it. In summary.

The charge stations and installations were paid for with federal stimulus and California Energy Commission grants won by Coulomb. If you are a consumer, and you get a Volt, Smart, or Ford electric car, you probably qualify for a free home charge station. Free Juice Bar explicitly sells charge stations to offer free power.

Plus installation. All plug-in cars these days come with a 120-volt charge cord. This will actually be sufficient for many if not most Volt drivers, and quite a few LEAF drivers. An empty Volt pack will take 10 hours to fully recharge; an empty LEAF about 20 hours. My installation was pretty simple, so it cost me nothing.

I had recently installed the PakTrakr system, so I cleared out the serial logging attachment and started collecting data. After the car sat for 20 minutes, I had enough juice to get to the auto parts place. After poking around under the hood, I also found a critical resistor that enabled the DC-DC converter had broken off.

The standard unit of electrical power is the watt, which is defined as a current of one ampere, at a voltage of one volt. More simply, volts x amps = watts. In the UK, the standard wall socket delivers 240 volts. In March 2020 we installed 9 solar panels an inverter and 2 battery packs. Power is watts. Octopus Go.
