Starting around the middle of 2024, the Shetlands—and also part of mainland Scotland—will be powered by the 443-megawatt Viking wind farm , consisting of 103 wind turbines on the main island of Shetland. According to Plet, wind energy is driving an acceleration of HVDC installations in Europe.

While renewable energy, particularly solar and wind, may have some potential to mitigate carbon emissions, this is not seen as a viable large-scale alternative for commercial shipping. For example, shifting from AC to on board DC grids would allow engines to operate at variable speeds, helping to reduce energy losses.
