General Motors and Honda are establishing the auto industry’s first manufacturing joint venture—Fuel Cell System Manufacturing, LLC, FCSM)—to mass-produce an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system that will be used in future products from each company. All of this made me think about of the differences in the way companies are introducing EVs into their product portfolios. They could: Offer an electric version of an existing vehicle Give an electric model a new or additional identity Introduce a new electric model Create a new electric sub-brand Start a new electric car company.

GM then had eight separate brands, and the Task Force proposed that the company should shutter all but two: Chevrolet and Cadillac. Thus, the restructured GM was composed of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, while the Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn brands died. The company has committed $800 million to that conversion.
