HyIron, with the support of the state of Lower Saxony, has commissioned what it says is the world’s largest direct reduction plant for green iron on the site of RWE’s Emsland gas-fired power plant. Water from the Hellisheiði power plant then flows through the facility and transports the carbon dioxide roughly 2,000 meters below the surface of the Earth. The water returns to the cycle of the geothermal power plant. This uses a specially developed adsorbent to bind the CO 2 in the air.
