CDSB was founded in January 2007 at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Large-scale bioenergy production from forest biomass is unsustainable and will increase greenhouse gas emissions, according to a group of international researchers in an invited analysis in the journal Global Change Biology/Bioenergy. The work was supported by several agencies in Europe and the US Department of Energy.
