Sure, the current Malibu is a bit behind the competition -- most car reviewers would place it behind the segment stalwarts from Honda and Toyota, and clearly most buyers have, too -- but it is still affordable and fuel efficient. Or if the Chinese come to our market with well-built, affordable sedans -- most of which would be EVs.

The battery-powered cars that Chinese companies are showing are intended to be much less expensive than those planned by big foreign companies. Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, which is expected to sell for $40,000 when it goes on sales in the U.S. In early testing, reviewers said a plug-in electric hybrid sedan from Chinas BYD Co.
