US field trials of the MINI E are already under way for two months, with BMW gathering data from the 450 MINI E drivers.

The ActiveE drivers can purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Green Mountain to cover the estimated electricity that will be used to charge their electric vehicles. The feedback from customers testing the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE will be fed directly into series production of the BMW i3.

The results of the study, which also suggested that assistance systems could reduce the size of that buffer, were based on more than 400,000 km (249,000 miles) of user experience gathered in the research project “MINI E Berlin powered by Vattenfall”.
