Ford is pushing back EV production at its Oakville, Ontario, plant as it shifts to expand its hybrid lineup. The American automaker sold 20,233 EVs in Q1 2024, topping rival General Motors with 16,425 electric cars delivered. Rivian’s R1S was the seventh best-selling EV in the US last year as the company scales production.

General Motors is adding two shifts and about 2,500 hourly and salaried jobs at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant to build the new Chevrolet Malibu mid-size sedan and the next-generation Impala large sedan alongside the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera electric cars. Detroit-Hamtramck currently has 1,121 hourly and salaried employees.

University students from The Ohio State University earned top honors at the 2009 finals of the EcoCAR : The NeXt Challenge competition in Toronto, Canada for their design of a Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). The next-generation design predicts a 300% increase in fuel economy over the production 4-cylinder vehicle.

General Motors Corp. reached agreements with the US Treasury and the governments of Canada and Ontario for the creation of a smaller, self-sustaining “New GM”. Pending approvals, the New GM is expected to launch in about 60 to 90 days as a separate and independent company from the current GM.
