Southern California Edison (SCE) opened the largest battery energy storage project in North America—the Tehachapi Energy Storage Project—to modernize the grid to integrate more clean energy. The project is strategically located in the Tehachapi Wind Resource Area that is projected to generate up to 4,500 MW of wind energy by 2016.

Ford Motor Company and Southern California Edison, in the deployment of plug-in hybrid electric commercial vehicles to more than 50 utility and municipal fleets nationwide. The entire system can be recharged by plugging it into a standard 120- or 240-volt electrical outlet.

Nine United States regions will receive 4,600 free chargers for public and private use through the ChargePoint America program, funded in part by $15 million in stimulus funds administered by the Energy Department. California-based Coulomb Technologies makes the program’s ChargePoint chargers, which were shipped to 130 customers in 2009.

GM may be in bankruptcy but remains unwavering in its commitment to have the Volt in some showrooms by November 2010. The plan calls for 39 mpg for cars and 30 mpg for light trucks and SUVs by 2016; no automaker lawsuits; and California subscribes to the national program through 2016. But their dreams haven’t yet been sunk.
