Inductive charging with a paddle-type connector was used in a number of earlier EVs, notably GM’s EV1, the Nissan Hypermini EV, and the Toyota RAV4. Subsequently, GM suspended production of its Gen2+ MagneCharge units in 2002. A spin-off from MIT, WiTricity , is commercializing an innovative approach to longer-distance wireless charging.

California law requires that the Volt and other plug-in hybrids come with a 10-year warranty. But not a single production plug-in electric vehicle sold to date, from GM’s early EV1 to today’s Tesla, has had a warranty of more than five years, noted Plug In America advisory board member Chelsea Sexton.
