But in the lead-up to that event, BYD has given us our first proper look at its PHEV ute, with the Shark pictured off-road as part of the promotion for its launch. Australia finally gets a petrol-electric hybrid 4×4 dual-cab ute mid-year when the GWM Cannon Alpha launches. More seriously, BYD is expected to introduce the first plug-in electric ute to Australia before the end of 2024 while the PHEV Ranger arrives in 2025. The Raptor puts out 292kW/583Nm from its V6 turbo-petrol engine.

All of the overall auto market’s 9% YoY volume growth came from growth in plugins, leaving combined plugless vehicles with a volume drop, albeit with some shift in weighting from diesel to petrol. The BYD Atto 3 saw its highest volume since the initial big splash in December, with 302 units in June, and 11th place.

Petrol share however took up some of the slack, and grew to 40.4%, the highest level seen since July 2021! In fact, the only notable newcomer to the French market was the BYD Atto 3, with just 5 initial units for sampling. Outlook The French economy is not in a great place, but better than many of its neighbours.

Petrol-only vehicles saw their lowest share in modern history, taking just 1% of the market. Outlook Norway’s economy is escaping some of the worst of the fate of other European neighbours. According to a recent forecast from the country’s central bank, Norges Bank , the economy is on track for modest 1.1% growth in 2023.

I could drive-away a Tesla Model 3 RWD (513km range) for around $66,000, while Chinese SUV rivals like the BYD Atto 3 and MG4 offer better specs for less. The claimed economy figure of 14.1kWh/100km looks optimistic on first drive. Overall economy? Can it really challenge a Tesla Model Y or BYD Atto 3? Nope again.
