The Swedish Energy Agency has awarded Volvo Group spinout PowerCell SEK7 million (US$965,000) for the MoRE Zero project to develop a fuel cell system for use in a modular range extender system for electric vehicles in the European ERA-NET project. PowerCell will develop a modular and scalable fuel cell system in the order of 20-25 kW.

Partners in the consortium represent the whole value chain of hydrogen from six different countries (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Spain, and Turkey). The technology will be demonstrated in real operation according to end-users’ needs, meeting market requirements for competitive low-carbon hydrogen production.

The overmolding process is carried out fully automatically in a purpose-built manufacturing cell at the main QCMS plant in Tielt, Belgium. It was first designed for the Ford Transit van, which is assembled in Turkey. A six-axis robot positions the leadframe precisely into the mold. The reinforced polyamide is then injected around it.

Whilst none of the scenarios considered would deliver the desired 80% cut in CO 2 emissions by 2050, the greatest savings potential arises from the combined package, in which technological improvements that reduce fuel consumption are used alongside measures to shift journeys to lower emission modes and to avoid the need to travel altogether.
