The European innovation project Flagships will deploy the world’s first commercial cargo transport vessel operating on hydrogen, plying the river Seine in Paris. Commercial operations are set to commence in 2021. The company is currently developing a new business for urban distribution with transport vessels in the Paris area.

Volvo Trucks and Shell will cooperate globally on the introduction of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a fuel for commercial heavy duty trucks. The proportions are up to 75% gas and 25% diesel, depending on the type of transport and driving cycle. The engine uses diesel to ignite the LNG.

Around 70% of light commercial vehicles used in urban areas travel fewer than 100 kilometers per day on average.

Scania has received an order for 158 buses from public transport company Keolis Sverige in Sweden. Keolis Sverige’s vision is to use locally suited, sustainable transport to double transit ridership in Swedish cities. The delivery to Keolis consists of urban, suburban and intercity buses.

A new European Joint Research Center (JRC) analysis on the deployment of electric vehicles (EV) in Europe concludes that although the sector evolved significantly between 2010 and 2017, progress is still small to be characterized as full-scale commercialization. In 2010, electric vehicles still represented a niche market.
