Due to “unforeseen battery supply constraints,” fewer than expected RAV4 Primes have gotten to the USA. The obvious next step after creating a popular RAV4 PHEV would be stepping up to an all-electric version.

Recent developments in lithium ion batteries, and the consequential range improvements of EVs has significantly dampened enthusiasm for hydrogen fuel cells. The Honda FCX Clarity FCEV and the Toyota Mirai FCEV, both use an electric drive motor and a battery pack. So why haven’t FCEV becoming as prolific as other electric cars?

In an interview Monday, Mr. Ghosn said Nissan decided to accelerate development of battery-powered vehicles because of high gasoline prices and environmental concerns, not just because of the need to meet stricter fuel-economy standards.
