GM today announced two contracts to "design and test lithium-ion batteries" for use in the Saturn Vue Plug-in Hybrid announced last month at the LA Auto Show. Johnson Controls/SAFT, the huge battery company at which President Bush first publicly announced his support for plug-in hybrids, received one contract.

Service and warranty of existing Malibu hybrids will be unaffected by the decision, as the company has an adequate supply of replacement components, including the 36/42V battery packs. The Malibu hybrid shares components with two other GM mild hybrids: the Saturn Aura and Vue hybrids. Jack Rosebro.

The actively coupled ultracapacitor-battery system has four primary components. and Gold Peak Battery-USA are research partners in the project. The ultracapacitor bank actively coupled via the power electronics allows the use of an energy optimized battery by reducing peak loads and minimizing internal battery heating.

A123 Systems , a much larger company which is providing batteries to GM for possible use in the Vue and Volt, will be showing off a plug-in hybrid powered by its Lithium batteries. Will Bush get the first view of a plug-in Vue? The story makes clear the Big Three are not involved in the meeting.

FCSM will operate within GM’s existing battery pack manufacturing facility site in Brownstown, Michigan, south of Detroit.
