Fraunhofer ISI/ICCT analysis of PHEV data finds real-world CO2 emissions 2-4x higher than official values

Green Car Congress

For their statistical analyses, the researchers made use of anonymized data that vehicle drivers had voluntarily reported to online portals such as Spritmonitor in Germany and MyMPG in the United States. The real-world share of electric driving for PHEVs, on average, is about half the share considered in the type-approval values.

Argonne Study Examines Impact of Real World Drive Cycles on Efficiency and Cost of Different PHEV Configurations

Green Car Congress

In the segment of the study presented, the Argonne team modeled four PHEV configurations: an input power split with a fixed ratio between the electric machine and the transmission (e.g., Camry hybrid) PHEV with a 4 kWh and an 8 kWh pack; and a series hybrid (extended-range electric vehicle, e.g., Volt) with a 12 kWh and a 16 kWh pack.

Study finds that low carbon vehicles will make progress in closing TCO gap by 2030, but will still require financial support for wide adoption

Green Car Congress

By 2030, the TCO premium for plug-in vehicles has decreased to £2,400 (US$3,825) for a PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) and £3,000 (US$4,782) for the pure EV (electric vehicle). Cost and performance attributes for an average vehicle in each class were then calculated from publicly available data. Non-plug-in hybrids.

Using the PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) to Transition Society Seamlessly and Profitably From Fossil Fuel to 100% Renewable Energy

Green Car Congress

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

Battery pack capacity vs. electric range for selected PHEVs in the US. The electric motor develops peak torque from start to around 2,000 rpm, and the TFSI’s maximum pulling power is available in a range from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm. The available A3 e-tron smartphone app allows drivers remotely to check on the status of their A3 e-trons.
