A team of Penn State engineers has demonstrated a thermally modulated lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery to offer an adequate cruise range per charge that is extendable by a 10-minute recharge in all climates, essentially guaranteeing EVs that are free of range anxiety. There is no more range anxiety and this battery is affordable.

Hybrid technology dates back to the early days of the automobile, pioneered by Porsche. There are several affordable hybrid models on the market. Gas is the primary fuel; the batteries recharge as the vehicle moves and brakes, but the electric power is an auxiliary motive source, so the car will need less fuel.

Since I couldn’t afford the time to endure slow charging, I had to skip that part of my planned road trip. Currently the only other cars with an 800-volt systems are the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT. My goal was to head north to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, then west to Fargo, ND, and back to Detroit via Iowa.
