The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is the first mass-market crossover utility with a hybrid powertrain since the demise of the Ford Escape Hybrid in 2012. Granted, there's the luxury Lexus NX hybrid (using some of the same underpinninngs), and the low-volume Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, with a mild-hybrid powertrain.

The redesigned 2016 Hyundai Tucson lets its maker mount a new attack on the compact crossover utility segment, where it's lost market share even as sales have soared due to low gas prices and new, more fuel-efficient entries. A tough competitive set includes popular rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape.

Toyota anticipates that the 2016 Prius ( earlier post ) will deliver fuel economy ratings of 54 MPG city / 50 MPG highway / 52 MPG combined. The 2016 Prius uses smaller, lighter hybrid components, including a new lithium-ion hybrid battery that replaces the nickel-metal hydride battery (excluding the Prius Two non-Eco grade) in most models.
