Study finds technology cost of achieving European 2020 LDV CO2 targets more than offset by resultant fuel savings

Green Car Congress

A report published by Cambridge Econometrics and Ricardo-AEA concludes that overall, the cost of technologies required to meet proposed European 2020 CO 2 regulations for vehicles (95 g/km for cars and 147 g/km for vans) will be more than offset by the resultant fuel savings. Study finds CO2 emissions trading more effective path to automotive CO2 reduction in Europe than tailpipe standards

Green Car Congress

They found that vehicle emission standards reduce CO 2 emissions from transportation by about 50 MtCO 2 and lower the oil expenditures by about €6 billion, but at a net added cost of €12 billion in 2020. This study, for the first time, quantifies the vast economic costs of that policy using a general equilibrium framework.

New diamine-appended MOFs can capture CO2 for half or less of the energy cost of current materials

Green Car Congress

Because MOFs are solid, the process also saves the energy costs of heating the water in which amines are dissolved. Last summer, Long co-founded a startup, Mosaic Materials, to use the new technology to reduce the cost of chemical separations, with plans in the works for a pilot study of CO 2 separation from power plant emissions.

GWU team demonstrates one-pot process for optimized synthesis of controlled CNTs from CO2; coupling cement and C2CNT

Green Car Congress

Stuart Licht ( earlier post ) have developed a new process that transforms CO 2 into a controlled selection of nanotubes (CNTs) via molten electrolysis; they call the process C2CNT (CO2 into carbon nanotubes). This synthesis consumes only CO 2 and electricity, and is constrained only by the cost of electricity.

This projected shift in market share has raised some concerns over the cost of attainting CO 2 emission targets. In Germany, the average hybrid car within the lower medium segment (also known as “Golf”-segment) in 2015 sold for €26,700 (US$30,476), whereas the average diesel car cost €1,700 (US$1,940) more.
