Study finds high exhaust temperatures within NTE operation for heavy-duty diesels with aftertreatment systems contribute to high nanoparticle concentrations

Green Car Congress

The transient results illustrate the gradual formation of the nucleation mode particles with continuous increase in exhaust temperatures. The particle number count under those conditions increased by more than an order of magnitude in comparison to DPF-out particle concentrations. Credit: ACS, Thiruvengadam et al. Click to enlarge.

Swiss team concludes that particulate filters should be mandatory for GDI engines

Green Car Congress

Empa researchers Norbert Heeb and Maria Munoz discovered large quantities of benzo(a)pyrene (red bar)—a combustion product responsible for cutting short the lives of cigarette smokers—in the exhaust gas emitted by GDI engines. The other vehicles were all built between 2010 (VW Golf, Euro 4) and 2016 (Citroën C4, Euro 6b).

GISS study finds applying stricter non-CO2 vehicle emission standards worldwide would yield climate benefits in addition to major health and agricultural benefits

Green Car Congress

Global and regional zonal mean temperature changes relative to 2010 due to non-CO 2. vehicle emissions under the baseline scenario (a) and the difference between the tight-standard and baseline scenarios (b). However, these standards will not reduce CO 2 emissions, which is required to mitigate long-term climate change, the team notes.

Transonic Looking at Final Funding Round This Year, Production Deployment of Supercritical Fuel System in 2014; 50-75% Improvement in Engine Fuel Economy

Green Car Congress

The chart shows heat release from a standard diesel combustion cycle (solid black line), overlaid with the heat release from a TSCi cycle (dashed blue line). TSCi combustion minimizes heat loss to the cylinder walls and in the exhaust. The Syracuse team, for example, is using exhaust gas heat to help bring the fuel to SC states.)

JRC provides initial results and qualitative trends of study of regulated gaseous emissions under NEDC and new WLTP; data from 21 vehicles

Green Car Congress

During the period from 2010 to 2015, JRC—involved in the process from the beginning—tested the various versions of the new test cycle and test procedure on a number of vehicles that were also tested under NEDC conditions. Two vehicles were type approved for the Euro 6 standard, three vehicles for Euro 4, and the rest for Euro 5.
