SDG&E tested the performance of two 2007-model Prius hybrids and then converted them into plug-in hybrids, using a Hymotion 5 kWh lithium-ion battery conversion kit. The converted plug-in hybrids recharge their batteries through a standard 110-volt household outlet and charge in five to six hours for a 5 kWh lithium-ion battery.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.

You can fill it up at the gas station, and you can plug it in to any 120-volt outlet. They reinforce the Pacific National Labs January 2007 findings that we wont have to build new power plants for cars that charge at night. We can achieve that -- today -- with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). You dont have to plug it in.
