Satellite method provides insight into ozone-NOx-VOCs sensitivity for different locations

Green Car Congress

Ozone pollution near Earth’s surface is one of the main ingredients of summertime smog. It is also not directly measurable from space due to the abundance of ozone higher in the atmosphere, which obscures measurements of surface ozone. —Jin et al.

Study finds that under business-as-usual scenario, average global air quality to worsen; China, North India and Middle East are the hot spots

Green Car Congress

China, North India and the Middle East are expected to be especially affected by a drastic decrease in air quality. Remarkably, the global PW-MPI in 2050 is projected to be similar to that in the Middle East in the year 2005. Northern India and the Arabian Gulf region, on the other hand, will suffer a marked increase in ozone levels.

ICCT study finds that transitioning to low-GWP MAC refrigerants in China could avoid up to US$150B in costs

Green Car Congress

Costs per gram per kilometer of CO 2 e reduced are attractive for all three alternatives relative to the cost of the engine technology package expected to be employed for fuel economy compliance in China. These were shown to be ozone-depleting, however, and were targeted for phasing out under the 1987 Montreal Protocol.

Emissions of potent GHG HFC-23 have grown, contradicting reports of huge reductions

Green Car Congress

Starting in 2015, India and China, thought to be the main emitters of HFC-23, announced ambitious plans to abate emissions in factories that produce the gas. When we saw the reports of enormous emissions reductions from India and China, we were excited to take a close look at the atmospheric data.

Study finds significant slowdown in decrease of NOx emissions in US; implications for air quality management

Green Car Congress

They found that levels of pollutants that can contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone, or smog, have failed to continue a fairly steady decline as estimated by the US Environmental Protection Agency. These results show that meeting future air quality standards for ozone pollution will be more challenging than previously thought.
