Global sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) emissions peaked in the early 1970s and decreased until 2000, with an increase in recent years due to increased emissions in China, international shipping, and developing countries in general, according to a new analysis appearing in the open access journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. in 2018 (2000-2018 average year-over-year increase is 6.8%), continuing the increasing trend as they replace Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) being phased out under the 1987 Montreal Protocol. These programs cover transportation fuels, industrial emissions, vehicle emissions and emissions from electricity generation.

The US biodiesel industry is on pace to produce more than the 1.28 The RFS aims to reduce oil imports and cut back auto emissions with cleaner-burning fuels such as cellulosic ethanol, biomass-based diesel, and sugar-cane-based ethanol. In addition, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has been operating on B20 since 2000.

The authors, under the umbrella of the Global Carbon Project , reported a 29% increase in global CO 2 emissions from fossil fuel between 2000 and 2008 (the latest year for which figures are available), and by 41% between 2008 and 1990, the reference year of the Kyoto Protocol. between 2000 and 2008, compared with 1% per year in the 1990s.

Right now the world is looking at well over a 2 degree rise in temperatures from the pre-industrial age. Available technology such as diesel particulate filters for vehicles and cleaner- burning biomass and solar cookstoves can significantly reduce black carbon emissions. Besides a danger to breathe, ozone lowers crop yields.
