Mild hybrids, which are typically found in 48 volt electric systems, do not require a plug to operate. PHEVs can run as electric vehicles in cities, significantly reducing tailpipe pollution. To this extent, both the Japanese brands are now convincing the government to reduce taxes on these types of vehicles.

Multiple recent studies have shown that in the real world, plug-in hybrids pollute much more than their labels would indicate – though still less than pure-fossil vehicles – both because they overstate their capabilities in electric-only mode and because people simply don’t plug them in. The grants, funded by a portion of the state’s annual utilities gross receipts tax, are intended to encourage new markets for alternative fuels, fleets and technologies across Pennsylvania. 4 models qualify for the $7,500 EV tax credit , making it the first foreign automaker to get the nod under tightened sourcing rules. The Treasury Department released guidance on which EV charging projects might qualify for the revived IRS 30C tax credit, which covers up to 30% of the cost of charger installations in “eligible census tracts.”
