InsideGreentech reports that Toronto Star reporter Tyler Hamilton posted on his personal blog that battery maker A123 Systems has acquired Canadian plug-in converter Hymotion. It would certainly be a good thing for A123 to have a reason beyond its relationship with GM to be interested in making batteries for plug-in cars.

Personally I'd trade range for earlier delivery, but of course it doesn't work that way. Seems the batteries are performing better than expected, and range is back up to about 250 mile per charge. But another delivery delay has been announced. Cars will not hit the road until early next year.

The video makes quite plain the societal and personal benefits of electric cars, and how GM actually met the challenge. Instead, as we know, GM drove a stake in its heart. Right through the controller after they confiscated each EV1 from consumers. GM hasn't got another 17 years to make this real.

Just as Governor Schwarzenegger is keeping his personal options open. Technology neutrality and firm deadlines have worked, and offer automakers enough flexibility to achieve the results we, and CARB, know are possible. We believe the Board must keep all its options open to incentivize battery electrics and plug-in hybrids.

And use the $15 million left over to educate Americans on why it is in their personal and the national security interest to buy a plug-in car. I say take the proposed $390 million in Bush's budget, and give 75,000 people a $5000 grant for the purchase of a plug-in hybrid or electric car.
