The US Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy (FE) and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) announced that the University of North Dakota has been awarded a 2-year, $1.5-million million contract to sample and characterize US coal-based resources containing high concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs).

Engineers at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering are using membrane distillation technology to enable drillers to filter and reuse the produced water in the oil and gas industry, in agriculture, and other beneficial uses. Airbus UpNext, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus, has revealed a flight test program to study the contrails produced by a hydrogen combustion engine as part the Company’s ZEROe roadmap. Test flights are scheduled for late 2022 in North Dakota in collaboration with the University of North Dakota.

The primary goal of these NETL-supported projects is to achieve at least 2%—20,000 parts per million (ppm)—REE elemental concentration, which represents a significant enrichment from feedstocks that typically contain REEs at 300 ppm (0.03%). The test was conducted utilizing a producing oil well in the Mission Canyon Formation, part of the Madison Group of Mississippian-age carbonate rocks in the western United States. Pressure (3,000 pounds per square inch) and temperature (180 °F) were among the highest. The formation was a carbonate rather than clastic reservoir.
