As the next step in Honda’s electrification strategy in North America, the company will focus on increasing hybrid volume of core models: CR-V, Accord and, in the future, Civic. To make room for these moves, Honda will conclude Insight production in June.

Honda Motor’s cumulative worldwide hybrid vehicle sales surpassed 800,000 units as of the end of December 2011—12 years and 2 months after the start of sales of the first generation Honda Insight in Japan November 1999. As of today, Honda sells seven hybrid models in approximately 50 countries around the world.

The all-wheel drive system for hybrids will use an electric motor developed for EVs to power one axle, eliminating the mechanical connection between the internal-combustion engine and that axle. Honda is already targeting 50% hybrids, as part of a plan to make hybrid versions of all its core models rather than hybrid-specific models.

The list of participants at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, which kicks off to the Press tomorrow (October 21), is perhaps indicative of Japan’s waning fortunes. When the Honda CR-Z (Compact, Renaissance, Zero) Concept (see article ) made its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2007 it was described as the “world’s first hybrid sports car”.

General Motors. Toyota Motor Sales, USA (TMS) reported July sales of 174,872, down 11.4% American Honda Motor Co., Nevertheless, July was Honda’s highest volume month so far this year. Total sales of the fuel-efficient Honda Civic increased 3.1% The new Honda Insight hybrid posted 2,295 units.
