Scientists at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, have deciphered the structure of a bacterial phytochrome, a light-sensing molecular “switch”, similar to that used by plants. Previous studies showed that the phytochrome exists in two stable states.
