There is more to Dan Neil's recent LA Times column than a favorable review of yet another gasoline-only hybrid. In December, Nissan announced its "Green Program 2010," projecting a line of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars utilizing lithium-ion batteries of its own manufacture. Calls it a "Camry hybrid in tight jeans."

The Volt , provided GM can get the lithium battery right , will go about 40 miles on an electric charge. At that point, the internal combustion engine kicks in and recharges the battery while you are driving. The Volt will even make people forget that it was Lutz who gave us the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. It runs down.

Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. But when you do, your car essentially becomes an electric vehicle with a gas-tank backup. Lifetime service costs are lower for a vehicle that is mainly electric. Scientist have confirmed that unlike gasoline cars, plug-ins will get cleaner as they get older -- because our power grid is getting cleaner.
