But its technological advantages are settled: With an EPA-rated range of up to 837 km ( 520 miles ), the Lucid Air sedan can travel farther on a charge, and charge faster, than any EV in history. The spacious sedan actually exceeded expectations, combining shelter-magazine interior luxury, slick handling and boggling acceleration.

That’s not surprising—the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, the company’s only previous plug-in hybrid, is a well-executed PHEV with an EPA-rated 32 miles of usable electric range that retains all the virtues of the Pacifica minivan. The e-Save button also toggles to invoke Battery Charge, which recharges the pack using engine power.

The car’s e-range estimates won’t break any records, but the EPA says its 12 kilowatt-hour Lithium-Ion battery offers drivers 22 miles of pure electric range. From 1992 to 2014, it was on Car and Driver Magazine’s Annual Ten Best list 22 times, making it the longest running entry in the list.

And yet, what about recharging? Fortunately, one of my fellow contributing editors at the magazine is a bundle of answers. That means I'd have to recharge at least once. Like gasoline cars, the EPA range rating, which is sort of the one that everybody quotes, has two parts. Will we have a universal standard for charging?

Volvo Ford-owned company exploring PHEVs "ReCharge" flex-fuel series 60-mile concept PHEV w/wheel motors. announced a partnership with utility Southern California Edison to test a fleet of rechargeable electric vehicles and said it expected to sell such plug-in hybrids within the next decade if battery technology keeps pace.
