The Chevrolet Volt has been awarded a fuel efficiency rating of the equivalent of 93 miles to the gallon when driven in electric-only mode, just falling short of the fuel economy figure awarded to its leading rival, the Nissan Leaf. Ford has revealed the fuel economy figures for the new Ford Explorer – and it will be the most fuel efficient seven-passenger SUV on the market. The vehicle will deliver an EPA-certified 28mpg on the highway with an all-new 2.0litre EcoBoost engine.

The vehicle uses a 3.5litre V6 petrol engine and a two-mode hybrid system to produce 46 per cent better fuel economy than a comparable V8-powered ML550 model. Its EPA rating is 24mpg highway, 21mpg city.

The Civic GX was actually first introduced in 1998 and is the cleanest internal combustion vehicle certified by the EPA - it is around 90 per cent cleaner than the average petrol powered car. It has been certified as an Inherently Low Emissions Vehicle by the EPA and is the only natural gas powered car available in all 50 states.

It expects the Volt to achieve city fuel economy of at least 230mpg given a single charge per day. Based on the same draft Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) methodology, the Volt would deliver triple digit combined cycle fuel economy along with combined cycle electricity consumption of 25kWh/100miles.
