The vehicles are used for contracted parcel delivery routes between USPS locations in North and South Carolina. Propane autogas engine technology has progressed to the point where emissions are reduced to near zero. Propane fleets report savings of 30 to 50% on filters and fluids due to the clean operation of the fuel.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing the availability of grant funding to implement projects aimed at reducing emissions from the nation’s existing fleet of older diesel engines. EPA anticipates awarding approximately $44 million in Diesel Emission Reduction Program (DERA) grant funding to eligible applicants.

Argonne, the Grainger College of Engineering and the School of the Chemical Sciences with the University of Illinois’ College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, are now partnering with the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) in conjunction with MTD’s initiative to add two fuel cell buses to its fleet of 111 vehicles.
