Plug-in cars are inevitable. Nissan appears intent on opening up a market for mid-price range electric cars within two years. GM may be in bankruptcy but remains unwavering in its commitment to have the Volt in some showrooms by November 2010. The trajectory remains clear, and the pace has quickened.

The charge stations and installations were paid for with federal stimulus and California Energy Commission grants won by Coulomb. If you are a consumer, and you get a Volt, Smart, or Ford electric car, you probably qualify for a free home charge station. ChargePoint America is looking for hosts for charge stations.

We noted in December that the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, was working to update standards for the interface between plug-in electric cars and the grid, and planned to agree on a set within months. The SAE standard for this is called J1772.
