Ricardo’s “deep” Miller cycle concept: Magma

Green Car Congress

In its new report on downsized and boosted gasoline engine technologies ( earlier post ) the ICCT highlighted Ricardo’s work on an “extreme” Miller cycle concept with high (13:1) compression ratio (CR) and central direct injection in a downsized boosted engine. Mazdas new SKYACTIV gasoline and diesel engines are steps on the road to its Ideal Engine; focus on compression ratio

Green Car Congress

However, while Mazda plans to offer hybrid vehicles in the medium-term, its engineers are pushing hard to increase the efficiencies of both the gasoline and diesel platforms, moving toward what they call “the ideal Internal Combustion Engine.” Extreme compression ratio rather than downsizing. Although downsizing—i.e.,

CPT developing 48-volt electric supercharger for micro-mild hybrids

Green Car Congress

At 48 volts, a VTES electric supercharger will transform 7kW of battery power into a highly boosted charge of air for downsized gasoline and diesel engines. There will be no torque deficit or other tradeoffs from essential engine downsizing and higher gearing, which now dominates the development of internal combustion engines.

Kia launching new diesel 48V mild-hybrid powertrain in 2018 on Sportage; more models to come

Green Car Congress

The new third-generation Kia Ceed will be the second among a range of Kia models to offer the new powertrain from 2019. If the battery has sufficient charge, the combustion engine turns off automatically during in-gear deceleration and braking. Charge from the 48V battery helps to start the engine in most conditions.

Toyota continues prepare the market for fuel cell vehicle in 2015

Green Car Congress

Re-emphasizing the general technology points that have emerged over the past few months at different events while adding a bit more detail, Yoshikazu Tanaka, Product General Manager of the Product Planning Group, said at the Geneva show that Toyota’s current fuel cell (FC) system features an output power density of 3.0

Eaton Highlights Range of New Products to Reduce Fuel Consumption and Emissions

Green Car Congress

We’re focused on the customers’ most critical issue—smaller packaging. Eaton has developed a range of next-generation variable valvetrain systems for high-speed overhead camshaft engines. When alloy choice alone is not enough to handle thermal loads, Eaton offers a full range of internally cooled engine valves.

Update on DOE Co-Optima project to co-optimize fuels & engines; goal of 30% per vehicle reduction in petroleum

Green Car Congress

The researchers suggest that there are engine architectures that can provide higher thermodynamic efficiencies than available from modern internal combustion engines; however, new fuels are required to maximize efficiency and operability across a wide speed/load range. We’re not going to say “Ethanol. Ethanol is the answer.”
