France-based Scaleo chip has introduced AMEC (Advanced Motor Events Control), a technology for internal combustion engines and electric motors control. Carmakers are developing a wide variety of new powertrain systems, from downsized thermal engine, to hybrid systems to full electric motorization.

Punch Powertrain, a Belgium-based full-system supplier of fuel-efficient powertrains including transmissions and plug-in hybrid and battery-electric systems, is acquiring France-based power electronics expert Apojee. Furthermore, the ICE can be downsized using a larger but slower turbo to retain power requirement.

Researchers at ETH Zürich are developing a pneumatic hybrid engine—an internal combustion engine connected to a compressed air tank instead of a battery system. If fuel is also injected, the engine responds quickly. The compressed air supply also allows extreme downsizing.

The new Yaris Hybrid—the first full hybrid vehicle to go on sale in the European B-segment—made its world debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The downsized full hybrid system combines the new 1NZ-FXE 1.5-liter liter gasoline engine with a lighter, more compact electric motor, transaxle, inverter and battery pack.

At the Geneva Motor Show, Toyota Motor Europe (TME) announced that European sales of hybrid vehicles reached an all-time high in 2013 totaling 156,863 units, up 43% year-on-year. In 2013 total Toyota Motor Europe sales reached 847,540 vehicles, an increase of 9,569 units from 2012, equalling a 0.2 Hybrid models now represent 18.5%
