The biocrude oil came from many different sources, including wastewater sludge from Detroit, and food waste collected from prison and an army base. Just as crude oil from petroleum sources must be refined to be used in vehicles, biocrude needs to be refined into biofuel. —Michael Thorson, a PNNL engineer and project manager.

The Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) has given approval to Cenovus Energy Inc. to proceed with its Narrows Lake oil sands project, with an ultimate gross production capacity of 130,000 barrels per day. SAP combines steam injection with solvents, such as butane, to help bring the oil to the surface.

China’s biggest offshore oil and gas producer, said it will buy Canadian oil-sands developer OPTI Canada Inc. billion barrels of recoverable bitumen resource.

The decision triggers investments of around NOK 2 billion (US$238 million), realizing a 60-70% cost reduction per MW from the Hywind demo project in Norway. The pilot park will cover around 4 square kilometres, at a water depth of 95-120 meters. With fixed turbines, offshore wind is optimal for 20-50 meters water depth.
