ALTe is targeting fleet vehicles such as delivery trucks, vans and shuttle buses and even potentially taxis and limos, in the light- to medium-duty vehicle classes—initially as conversions, but ultimately extending to an OEM basis. ALTe is in long-term supply agreements with battery maker A123 Systems and electric motor supplier Remy.

In was eager to get the new DC-DC converter installed so I left work a bit early and got to work so I could still drive the car to breakfast with my girlfriend tomorrow morning. Here's the mostly final installation. This version had mounting tabs that fit well with the bolt holes from the original kit.

I couldn't find a good solution with the copper bars supplied by ElectroAuto, so I just took my best guess and gave it a shot. A modification of the prior strap is basically what is suggested in the DC kit instructions. I found a funny shaped link in the kit, but could simply not get it to fit anywhere in the system.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.

I ran out to United Welding Supply today in Portland (on NE MLK) and picked up 20 feet of 2/0 welding cable. They recycle a lot of uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) which often contain high-current Anderson connectors on the dead batteries. FreeGeek also sells laptop power supplies. Parkrose hardware had it for $7.00/foot

After studying the AC kit diagrams and reading the motor controller documentation from Azure Dynamics, I think I understand a little better what all these relays and terminal strips are for. Randy, another 914 EV AC kit customer is going to send me a few sketches so I can move things around, if necessary. Getting closer.

You can see the pins that were previously installed by Electro Auto. The original kit doesn't use the red light and the green light is simply grounded. Since the indicators on the dash already have one side tied to the 12V supply, I simply used a 2N2222 transistor (buy a pack of them at Radio Shack) to drive the two indicators.

Jo has done an excellent job of "pimping" the ride, the original kit from Blue Sky Designs in Oregon. In our haste, we unfortunately installed the steering backwards. Jerry is the owner of a PHEV Prius with Plug in Supply conversion kit, plus solar panels on the roof installed by Bob Bruninga, Naval Academy engineering professor.
