Nel’s CEO, Håkon Volldal said that the short distance to General Motors, headquartered in Detroit, played a decisive role in the choice of state. When fully developed, the Michigan facility will have a production capacity of up to 4GW of Alkaline and PEM electrolyzers.

General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, home of the Chevrolet Volt, will close for four weeks beginning in June for planned upgrades to prepare for a significant increase in the rate of Volt production, along with assembly of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan.

US Hybrid plans to expand its Connecticut production facility via a partnership with China-based Jiangsu Dewei Advanced Materials. USFC anticipates production and delivery of more than 1,200 PEM fuel cell engines in the next 36 months. The US FuelCell, Inc. US Hybrid is also providing Caltrans with a fuel cell street sweeper.

Concurrent with upcoming deliveries of the Chevrolet Volt to dealerships in California, Connecticut (Tri-State Metro Area), Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Washington, D.C., Volts will be shipped to Chevrolet dealerships with 40% HV battery state-of-charge and two gallons of fuel.

Volts are expected to arrive at dealerships in Michigan, New Jersey, Connecticut, as well as the balance of Texas and New York in the first quarter of 2011. Additional markets will be added as production volume increases during the second model year, with Volt available in all 50 states 12 to 18 months after the initial launch.

Hyundai began leasing its first series production fuel cell electric vehicle at select dealerships in Southern California. MW fuel cell power park opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and the world’s largest fuel cell power plant, 59 MW, was installed in Korea. The UK launched a similar initiative called UK H 2 Mobility ( earlier post ).
