The project is funded as part of the showcase “Electromobility Connects” Bavaria-Saxony by the federal government. BMW has already gathered data from more than 16 million kilometers (10 million miles) of testing with the MINI E (its first EV model) and about 5 million kilometers (3 million miles) with the BMW ActiveE (its second EV model).

BMW selected the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014 in Las Vegas as a venue at which to preview future developments and new applications of connected vehicle technology for series-produced vehicles. With their range of part-automated functions, they already lighten the driver’s workload much more significantly than conventional systems.

The feedback from customers testing the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE will be fed directly into series production of the MCV, which the BMW Group will be launching under a new sub-brand in 2013. Intensive use of this recuperation of energy via the motor also results in a range increase of up to 20%.

The motor offers linear power delivery extending into high rev ranges, with maximum revs of 11,400 rpm. Notably, in its first experimental dip into electrical vehicles with the Mini-E, BMW also used an AC induction motor, provided by AC Propulsion. Reluctance motors include no magnet material on their rotors.

The BMW Concept ActiveE follows the all-electric MINI E as the second large-scale electric vehicle test program to be conducted in the hands of interested customers. The field tests with the MINI E as part of Project i in the US and Europe have already provided insights into the demands required of future production electric vehicles.
