The road ahead for Toyota as it starts competing seriously in the all-electric market just got a lot tougher. As recently corroborated by the veteran Japanese carmaker, it has already crossed the 200,000-unit cap for the United States’ $7,500 tax credit for hybrid and all-electric vehicles.

The base Model 3 starts at $40,240, which can drop as low as $25,240 after accounting for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit and the $7,500 California tax credit. The Camry starts at more than $26,000 for comparison.

In comparison, an electric vehicle from, say, Toyota, with its bZ4X, does not have a dedicated financing deal. Toyota’s online payment calculator for its all-electric bZ4X indicates that the vehicle is listed with an estimated monthly payment of $692. It’s not just Toyota either.

Toyota, which does publish sales of its PHEV models, reported that the RAV4 Prime — which is the PHEV version of the number 4-selling vehicle in the US since since 2017 — had 2021 sales of 27,707 units. From where I sit, a new PHEV from Jeep outselling the Toyota RAV4 Prime is actually pretty impressive. Flip a coin.
