The big companies weren’t going to do it. Every previous attempt to reduce that number—by thermostat manufacturers, by energy companies, by government bodies—had failed miserably for a host of different reasons. This needed to be an easy DIY project, a quick upgrade. I suspect most companies would have sighed with relief.
