In June 2022, just before the second round of Colombia’s national elections, former President Ivan Duque announced that the de-facto subsidy for gasoline* would be gradually dropped. The decision, thankfully, was approved by the new administration of President Gustavo Petro, and the cost of gasoline started to increase monthly.

A new study released by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) finds greenhouse gas emissions from corn-based ethanol are about 39% lower than gasoline. The study also states that when ethanol is refined at natural gas-powered refineries, the greenhouse gas emissions are even lower—around 43% below gasoline. Searchinger et al.

The US Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is working with Ecopetrol, the largest oil company in Colombia, to process the residue from sugar cane and palm oil harvesting into fuel ethanol for blending with gasoline. Colombia has an abundance of biomass in the form of sugar cane.

All OEMs discontinued smaller diesel engines which was particularly difficult for the industry as high levels of sales came from diesel—Maruti Suzuki shifted to gasoline and CNG when 20% of their sales previously came from diesel engines. The rest of the world posted mixed results.

Abroad, meanwhile, an ethanol production unit is under analysis for Colombia. Separately, last week, Brazil Japan Ethanol (BJE), a joint venture formed between Petrobras and Japan Alcohol Trading, inaugurated its first unit to produce E3 (a 3% ethanol-gasoline blend) in Japan. Petrobras holds 87.5% of the stakes in the refinery.
