70% of the energy from burning fossil fuel is wasted as heat, while only 30% goes to turn your wheels. So after we use all that electricity pumping oil out of the ground, refining it, transporting it, we then waste 70% when we burn it. These cars and trucks have internal combustion engines that are extremely inefficient.

The vision is fuelled by the fear of climate change and the need to find green alternatives to dirty coal, unpopular nuclear power and unreliable gas imports from Russia. Every scrap of waste food, garden trimmings and even sewage would be used to ferment gas. Are we going to burn more oil, natural gas, or (gasp) coal to produce it?

That being said, even a car that derives its energy from coal power plants would be far more clean. Having centralized energy production in that way allows for centralized pollution control measures, filters, so-called "clean coal" rather than depending on X number of cars, manufacturers, and consumers to deal with pollution control.

To deal with this major special waste problem has to my knowledge never ever been brought to the attention of the readers of any paper around the world. Denmark did that with Wind Power and now most of their energy comes from wind rather than oil, natural gas, or coal. We should have built more Nuclear power plants and created a nuclear waste recycling program. We should have built out a fiber optic to the home country wide network to usher in a new age of broadband in this country.
