A report from the New Zealand Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Jan Wright, is calling for a more strategic approach to biofuels. The purpose of the report is to consider strategically how biofuels might lessen the country’s dependence on fossil fuels and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Australia-based Carbon Energy Limited is in the final stages of constructing its 5 MW power station which will be powered by syngas produced from its underground coal gasification (UCG) facility at Bloodwood Creek in Queensland. New Zealand-based LanzaTech has successfully produced 2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BD), a key building block used to make polymers, plastics and hydrocarbon fuels, using the company’s gas fermentation technology. Under van Wijk’s concept, a plant would produce methanol from natural gas on the North Slope using the proposed GigaMethanol technology.
