The major selling point of the Insight is its hybrid powerplant, a petrol-electric unit that reduces CO2 emissions and provides a cleaner, greener way of motoring.

It found that the American sports car churns out 488g/km of carbon dioxide (CO2) - meaning 322 oak trees would be needed to absorb its emissions over the course of a year. This family-sized hybrid vehicle emits just 101g/km of CO2 - pointing out the huge discrepancy between the greenest and least green cars available in Britain.

The title of WhatGreenCar Car of the Year 2009 has been awarded to the ‘next generation’ Toyota Prius, due to be launched in the UK on 1 st August 2009.
