Rolls-Royce is further developing its mtu gas engine portfolio for power generation and cogeneration to run on hydrogen as a fuel and thus enable a climate-neutral energy supply. Already today, gensets powered by mtu Series 500 and Series 4000 gas engines can be operated with a gas blending of 10% hydrogen.

HyIron, with the support of the state of Lower Saxony, has commissioned what it says is the world’s largest direct reduction plant for green iron on the site of RWE’s Emsland gas-fired power plant. At the plant, iron ore will be reduced solely with the aid of green hydrogen. Airtight rotary kiln for iron reduction.

As part of the publicly funded Enerport II project, Duisport, one of the world’s largest inland ports, will commission a new terminal with a hydrogen-based supply network during 2024. In the future, most of the electrical and thermal energy required in the port will be generated directly on site from hydrogen in a CO 2 -neutral manner.

If the fuels are produced with the help of renewable energy and green hydrogen—through what is termed a Power-to-X process—existing rail vehicles can be operated in a completely CO 2 -neutral manner. Series 1600 and versions of Series 4000 engines will follow in the near future.
