VERBIO begins production of biomethane from corn stover in Iowa; first-large scale plant in US

Green Car Congress

Carbon dioxide and other impurities are removed through a biogas treatment process, leaving nearly pure biomethane gas which is chemically equivalent to fossil natural gas. This biomethane is then suitable for injection into the natural gas transmission or distribution grid. —Claus Sauter, CEO of VERBIO AG.

BMW plant brings electrically heated ring hearth furnace into operation

Green Car Congress

Compared with its conventional gas-powered equivalent, the latest electric furnace currently saves some 300 tonnes of CO 2 a year. Rather than using 33 gas flames in ceramic-jacketed pipes, as the older model does, the new furnace uses the same number of electric heating elements to heat up to 900 degrees Celsius.

HyIron opens direct reduction plant for green iron

Green Car Congress

HyIron, with the support of the state of Lower Saxony, has commissioned what it says is the world’s largest direct reduction plant for green iron on the site of RWE’s Emsland gas-fired power plant. Here the hydrogen reacts completely with the oxygen in the iron ore and converts it into elemental iron (direct reduced iron (DRI)).

BASF and RWE proposing 2GW offshore wind farm for green electricity and hydrogen for chemical industry

Green Car Congress

Examples of such technologies are: eCracker: Electrically heated steam cracker furnaces to produce petrochemicals at high temperatures (~850 °C); these temperatures will be reached in the eCracker using electricity instead of natural gas. Methane pyrolysis: Methane pyrolysis uses green electricity to split methane into hydrogen and carbon.

Promising results from Mercedes-Benz fleet test of Clariant high-octane cellulosic E20

Green Car Congress

The cellulosic ethanol in sunliquid 20 demonstrates greenhouse gas emission savings of up to 95% across the entire value chain (well-to-wheel perspective) without competing with food production or agricultural acreage. The prior experiences from the pilot project are optimistic, as are greenhouse gas emission savings regarding efficiency.
